Buoyancy when Scuba Diving! 🤿
Buoyancy is such an essential skill for divers for so many reasons: it helps with air consumption, it protects our reef, it makes kicking easier and you feel less exhausted from a dive! However, buoyancy is something that is often overlooked in day to day diving. Here are my top tips for good buoyancy:
1. Get correctly weighted. There is no need to be extremely overweight when diving, conduct a buoyancy check prior to diving
2. Take it slow, add small bursts of air at a time and be patient, wait at least 3 breath cycles before adding more air. Let out tiny amounts of air and remember to let out air early and often on the way up!
3. Stop moving your hands! You look so much less cool when your hands wave all over the place, and it's harder to control your buoyancy. Often, if you're moving your hands, it means you need to adjust how much air is in your BCD.
4. Swim horizontally! Swimming in a vertical position just kicks you to the surface, may as well snorkel 😂
5. Relax! Buoyancy comes with time, I reckon it takes about 20 dives to really get a hang of your buoyancy. Ask those around you if you need help and just trial and error with weights, find what works for you!
I do not have all the answers, and I'm sure there's at least one person reading this and shaking their head. Feel free to leave your buoyancy tips and tricks in the comments too! 🙈🎉
